Refinishing a Dated Oak Kitchen in Four Days

Replacing kitchen cabinets can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take weeks. Refinishing them, done properly, gives you a showroom-quality kitchen in a few days, for a fraction of the price. Here's exactly how we did it on a recent project in Appomattox.

Refinished kitchen cabinets

The starting point

The homeowners loved their kitchen's layout but not its dated orange-oak cabinets. New cabinetry would have meant a demolition, a long timeline, and a big budget. Refinishing let them keep the solid boxes they already had and change the entire look and feel of the room.

Day one: prep is everything

The finish is only ever as good as the prep, so this is where most of the work happens. We removed every door and drawer front and labeled them, then cleaned and degreased every surface. Kitchens hold more cooking grease than people expect, and paint won't bond to it.

From there we sanded to give the new finish something to grip, filled any dings, and masked off the counters, floors, and walls. Before a drop of color went on, the room was fully protected and dust-controlled.

Days two and three: prime and finish

We applied a bonding primer built for slick, previously-finished surfaces, then sprayed the color coats. Spraying, rather than brushing, is what gives cabinets that smooth, factory-fine look with no visible brush strokes. Between coats, we sanded lightly so the final surface felt like glass.

  • Bonding primer for a lasting grip
  • Sprayed color coats for a smooth finish
  • Light sanding between coats
  • A durable, washable topcoat

Day four: reassembly and walkthrough

Once everything cured, we reinstalled the doors and drawers, adjusted the hardware, and did a detailed walkthrough with the homeowners. The result: a brighter, more modern kitchen that looks brand new, without the cost or disruption of a full remodel.
